Ah, the Balmain Regatta, one of our favourite events of the year; Historically over the last few years, it’s been a scorcher of a day. However, this year we had an overcast day with a blowy 15-22 knot southerly which meant the wind was a little fresher than previous years.
Balmain Sailing Club has a soft spot in my heart as it’s where we learnt to sail; sailing lasers out the front of Cockatoo Island and progressing quickly onto our first boat Dolphin. So, when the Balmain Sailing Club ask us to cover this regatta, it feels like a coming home party, and we’re more than happy to cover the event.
The regatta started without a hitch, with blowy variable conditions, we took our boat and waited between the Birchgrove Ferry Wharf and Goat Island to catch the merging fleets.
We watch the yachts as they start to come around the corner and head up the harbour, then the different fleets all begin to meet, and at one point about 20-30 boats were converging at us all at the same time from every direction. We have to grab what we think is the most exciting shots in these situations.
